Cape Cod is an arm-shaped peninsula located in Massachusetts that provides some of the best saltwater fishing you could ever find.

It is fun, relaxing and exciting all in one and can be enjoyed by anglers of all skill levels and age groups. Surf casting and fly fishing are two of the most popular techniques used when fishing at Cape Cod. Both techniques are enjoyed by the locals and the tourist in this area.<br />

When you visit Cape Cod you can go freshwater or saltwater fishing whichever interest you the most. Make sure that you use the right equipment for the type of water you are fishing in because you can’t use freshwater gear in saltwater without damaging it.

One reason Cape Cod is so popular is because there are so many different species of fish found in this area. It has a lot of opportunities for anglers to have a fun and exciting adventure while doing something they love.

If you are preparing to visit Cape Cod to give surf fishing or fly fishing a try then the information below can be beneficial. Here you can learn a little about the different species of fish that you can catch when you go fishing at Cape Cod and some basic information about the lures and bait to use.

Types of Fish at Cape Cod

There are literally hundreds of species of fish located at Cape Cod. Since it would be difficult to name them all, below you will find a list of the most popular species located in this area.

  Bluefish
Flounder
Herring
Bonito
Mackerel
Cod
Striped Bass
Sea Bass
Largemouth Bass
Trout

When fishing at Cape Cod it is recommended that you go out in the early morning and late evenings for the best results. Not only is this the time when the fish are feeding the most aggressively but it is also when the areas are less populated. This gives you more privacy and less competition. It is also the quietest time which will result in more bites because lots of noise will scare the fish away.

Lures and Baits

There are no specific lures or bait to use when fishing at Cape Cod but you will find that the following seem to work the best in most all situations.

Some of the best lures include the following:

Metal Lures
Swimmers
Jigs
Soft Plastic Lures

Some of the best baits include the following:

  Clams
Sea-worms
Sand eels
Squid
Butterfish
Mackerel
Herring

It is recommended that you experiment to discover which lures and baits will work the best. This will also be determined by the species of fish you are searching for and you can try other types of lures and bait that are not listed here.

Where to Search for the Fish

Having an idea of where to start searching for the fish will help you have a more productive and enjoyable fishing trip. Here are a few tips on where to search for the fish at Cape Cod.

One of the very first decisions that you will need to make is where to start fishing. You have three options which are the Upper Cape, Mid-Cape and Lower Cape. Each section has its own unique qualities that give you an experience to remember and talk about for a long time to come.

Fly Fishing Calendar

What are the best times to try and schedule a fly fishing expedition? When we talk about a fly fishing calendar or even a fly fishing journal helps, we aren’t referring to a printed date book that you can hang on your wall. We are talking about targeting and specifying the right times to fish and the right places to fish at.

The things you need to look at most when considering a fly fishing calendar or a fly fishing journal is when the water will be at the right temperature that is prime for catching fish. Depending on the area you are looking at for your fly fishing trip will depend on the right time to go.

In some places like California, the fishing is pretty good year-round. While in other places such as Washington, you’ll want to avoid the water in the winter as the cold temperatures will stress the fish and they won’t be as plentiful.

Generally, the fly fishing calendar or fly fishing journal shows the best fishing in the spring and summer months. Early fall will also find some places showing good fishing as well. Almanacs can be helpful guides to guide you towards the best fishing times as can constant updating through Internet web sites.

Most places will give weekly, and sometimes daily, fishing reports on their websites. They can tell you where the fish are biting and where the best places are to cast your line. They generally keep these areas of their sites updated pretty regularly, so you can get quality reports just by looking at what others have to say.

Fish like warmer waters, although, there are other species that thrive in cold water such as salmon or steelhead. In general, warm water will attract more fish. However, if the water is too warm, the fish will be sluggish and will navigate to places where the water is cooler.

The fly fishing calendar or fly fishing journal used most often by experienced fishermen has been compiled over a period of time. They spend a considerable amount of effort to estimate where and when the best fishing will occur. Then they share it with others. That’s one of the best parts of fly fishing – the camaraderie and sharing that can come about with a love of the sport.

You can compile your own fly fishing calendar with a little time and effort. Just do your homework and keep copious notes. When you see a trend, you’ll know it’s time to fish! Then be sure to help your fellow fishermen as they try to figure out what you already know. They’d do it for you!please click here to learn more.

And now, for all those who feel passionate about fishing, here’s good news! Now various online shopping portals with excellent collection of fishing accessories have come up. And with them coming in, shopping for fishing online has become really easy and cheap! Goods and commodities are cheap online because suppliers purchase the goods at a discounted price and in bulk quantities. To make the entire process of online shopping easy and simple for you, various online fishing shops are having their products listed and arranged neatly. Some of them have categories like ‘accessories’, ’clothing’, ‘luggage’, ’lure fishing’, ‘coarse fishing’ and others. All you need to do is choose the category of your choice and pick the products that suit your purpose the best. You can even call them or drop a mail for any kind of assistance.
Although there are hundreds of types of flies used for fly fishing, most of them fall into five specific categories, or types. These types are dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers and buck tails, and terrestrials. The main purpose of the fly is to imitate an insect that the fish wants to eat.

A dry fly imitates a natural insect that is floating on the top of the water. Fish are very sensitive to any motion of their water and how currents move the insects they want for food. In fly fishing, if a dry fly is moving even slightly against the current, the fish will have nothing to do with it. The fly may look like something the fish recognizes but it is not acting the same an insect would. The fish recognizes it as something foreign in the water and leaves it alone.

In fly fishing, a wet fly is imitating a drowned, or drowning, natural insect and is fished below the water surface. No one is sure if the wet fly is seen as a drowning adult insect or a nymph from the perspective of the fish. Most fly fishermen today seem to believe that it is seen as a nymph. Because of this less and less wet flies are being sold. Wet fly fishing is the oldest form of fly fishing. It dates back to descriptions of the early Macedonian people.

A nymph is the stage between an egg and the adult in the life cycle of an insect. In fly fishing, flies that resemble nymphs are growing popularity. The nymph fly is just below the surface of the water. When a fish bulges the water without breaking the surface, he is nymphing. This means that the fish is eating the natural nymphs just as they are emerging from their shell. This is what a nymph fly imitates.

Streamers and buck tail flies do not imitate any part of the insect’s life cycle. These types of fly fishing flies are much larger and represent small bait fish such as sculpin minnows. The main difference between theses two types of flies is that streamers are tied with feathers, and bucktails are tied completely with hair. Fly fishing that uses these two types of flies generally requires more rod and line manipulation. The movements are supposed to duplicate the motions of the little fish.

Although most flies represent water insects, a terrestrial fly is made to imitate a land insect that has fallen into the water. The two most common terrestrials that are imitated for fly fishing are the ant and the grasshopper.

Besides these basic five categories of flies, there are many other kinds of flies that are used for fly fishing. Some of them are a combination of one or more of the basic categories and some do not fit into any group. The most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how the fly looks to you, the fisherman. It matters how the fly looks to the fish.

Here comes March! This is usually the time when I wrap up my ice fishing. It’s time to think about getting ready for spring fishing. Do you need new line? Maybe you need a new pole or reel? The sales usually start during this month for all of the gear you need. Maybe you would like to find someplace new. Pick a place you haven’t tried yet and plan a weekend trip to check it out.

My brothers and friends and I use the winter months to plan on a new trip for spring. This year we are going to devote a few days to brooks for that elusive trout. I found a couple while in the backwoods looking for new deer sign. Can’t wait to flip a fly in them and see what is there.

  See you on the water!

Time to Clean out Your Tackle Box

Meanwhile we might as well get the old tackle box out and give it a good cleaning. The first thing to do is through away all the junk (old line and candy wrappers).

Now let’s get serious. What is your primary target this year? I use two tackle kits, a box for boat fishing and a shoulder bag for canoe and stream fishing. This allows me to carry a lighter load and eliminate gear that I don’t need.

It’s also a good way to weed out gear you don’t really need. A good hook sharpener comes in handy in most any kit. Keep one handy at all times. There’s no sense losing a fish to a dull hook.

The next thing you should look at is the condition of your lures. Are they rubbed or scratched? Touch up paint or even fingernail polish (check with your wife or daughters first) will do the trick. Brush on little sealer after they are dry and you’re all set for another year. You might want to check the trebles at this time. Now is the time to replace bent and rusty hooks.

When you get to those plastics, whether tubes or worms, be sure to take out any that have begun to stick to the box. They will definitely cause you trouble later on.

I’m tired just writing about it. Think I’ll go take a beer break! See you on the water.

If you like outdoors, especially shallow or deep waters, fishing could be one hobby you might contemplate. Of late, the hobby is becoming expensive, with the costs of rods, lines, hooks and tackles going up. Add to that the costs of booking a fine fishing holiday at a decent location. Fishing, angling, trawling, trapping, etc are all techniques of various kinds. The most usual technique that hobbyists seek is angling.

Fresh water fishing is the most sought after hobby of holiday seekers. People who don’t have this emotional attachment to fishing might think it a waste to visit other countries solely for the purpose of fishing –anglers know better. They spend much time, money and effort to catch a special fish – either edible or inedible. Whatever you look for – an exotic species, the heaviest catch or fishing at the most celebrated fishing locations, the choices are endless. You still have thousands of lakes and rivers not fished, even if you spend your whole life fishing in a new location every day – although it can bore you to death.

Trout fishing, fly fishing, bass fishing, ice fishing, carp fishing, game fishing, catch and release fishing, salt water fly fishing, kayak sport fishing, the choices for an engaging holiday are endless. You can just go fishing on yourself or compete against other anglers, on the race to the longest or heaviest fish. Or maybe you go open seas, hunting for tuna, sharks, mackerel, etc with your big game fishing competition and adventures. Maybe you take the fish home for a delicious meal of give it away for others in case you don’t want to eat your catch.

Fishing locations are usually recognised by local authorities and you should be knowledgeable about the locations where you can fish. Before going fishing, you should also get a clear idea about the restrictions you have – including the maximum fish (by weight) one can catch in a day and the restrictions to catch a specific species. Strictly following the guidelines is important, as you don’t want uncomfortable and unwanted moments later.

Fish species data, rivers and streams, fishing forecasts and fishing reports are also published on a regular basis by the organizations and travel agents that offer fishing holidays. If looking for salt water fishing, you might also take a look at the tide charts and forecasts. It is not just about getting the forecasts and guidelines – it is also about application of the information to ensure a memorable fishing experience. You can spend the whole time without a single fish or can get more than you are legally allowed to catch in a matter of 30 minutes. It is not always about the techniques you use – it is also (sometimes) about the luck you have.

Fishing holidays can always guarantee you some good time, enjoying the freshness of nature and the thrills of chasing a dream. Let fishing be in your itinerary, in the next vacation you are planning.

Fishing in the Florida Keys: Islamorada

At the southern most part of the United States, located between the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida Bay are the Florida Keys. Not only is this one of the most amazing places to vacation, with breathtaking scenery, sandy beaches, and crystal clear water; but there is an abundance of fish that inhabit the warm waters of the Florida Keys. Here, the enormous variety of fish species ranges from Kingfish to Permit. You can go off shore fishing for the big game such as Tuna and Marlin, but the Keys are also ideal for flat fishing on the Florida Bay for Bonefish or Tarpon. Each of the Keys is acknowledged for a special type of fish. Although the species of fish available may vary in different seasons, there is always something to catch year-round in the Keys.

Islamorada is one of the Upper Keys, and known as the sport fishing capital of the world. There have been more record-breaking fish caught here than anywhere in the world. Unlike anywhere else on the Atlantic Coast, the waters of the Gulf Stream are only a few miles offshore. These waters carry hundreds of different species of fish, as well as all warm water game fish that swims in the Northern hemisphere.

Fly fishing is becoming increasingly popular in Islamorada, catching many different types of fish. Some of the most popular fish caught on fly are Spotted Trout, Blue Marlin, Tarpon, and Bonefish.

You may choose to go offshore fishing in the breathtaking blue-green waters of Islamorada. Here you will find fish such as Sailfish, Dolphin, Marlin, Kingfish, Yellowtail, Wahoo, and Mutton Snapper.

If you fish in the beautiful backcountry bays, you will likely find Redfish, Snook, Sea Trout, Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, as well as many other fish. The waters here are calmer and shallower than that of the ocean. This allows for the use of flats and poling your boat.

Although you are likely to find most species of fish year round, there are certain seasons when specific fish are most abundant in the area.

Winter

Cobia, Grouper, Kingfish, Sailfish, Tuna, Shark

Spring

Blue Marlin, Dolphin, Snapper, Tarpon, Yellowtail, Wahoo

Summer

Tarpon, Dolphin, Yellowtail, Blue Marlin

Fall

Wahoo, Kingfish, Grouper, Bonefish, Snook

There are many fishing tournaments throughout the year in Islamorada. Some of these tournaments include; Captains take “the Cup”, Islamorada Swordfish Tournament, Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge, George Bush Cheeca Lodge Bonefish Tournament, and Hog’s Breath King Mackerel Tournament.

There are hundreds of fishing charters, boat rentals, and guides located at the many marinas, to familiarize you with the best areas to fish. The different fishing charters include backcountry flats fishing, light tackle fishing, party boats, and offshore fishing. Because of the importance of local knowledge, it is best to choose fishing charter captains from locals who are familiar to fishing in the area.

A late summers day float trip fly fishing for whitefish, rainbow trout and brown trout on the city of Calgary section of the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The wind is steady, but so are the fish as The Humblefisherman is joined by his friend Jay Lang. They nymph the tailouts and seams from a driftboat as well as from shore. A giant Brown Trout eats a pheasant tail late in the day and the Humblefisherman lands one of the most beautiful Brown Trout he&#39;s ever seen.
Help answer the question about fly fishing
Looking for suggestions for a fly fishing trip?
My 40th birthday is approaching (rapidly) and I have been given an opportunity to travel to any part of the continental US for a 2 week fly fishing trip either this fall or next spring. I am opening it up here for suggestions. My ideal trip would be one where I could hire a guide for a day or two then fish on my own.

Anyone had any good trips they would recommend?

Since the earliest fisherman plucked fish from the water with their bare hands, anglers have found many different methods of fishing. Fly fishing is one of the oldest and has been in existence for hundreds of years. Believed to have begun during Roman times, the advanced methods of fly fishing are considered to have developed in Scotland and England. With improved reels, line and fly gear fly fishing has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds.

Originally, fly fishing was mainly used to catch trout and salmon, which are easily fooled by artificial flies. However, many species of fish are now being targeted by fans of sport fishing using dry and wet flies. Today the lines are heavier and larger in diameter. As a result there is a need for a larger reel that is required to hold that size of line. Anglers now research the local water life to determine the best colors and styles of flies that may be able to attract the local fish population.

The main purpose of fly fishing is to offer an artificial fly to the fish that will closely resemble an insect or bug that is native to the area. Curious fishermen may spend a lot of time researching the types of bugs that flourish in the region as well as spending time studying the types of fish and how they approach their victims.

Practice, Practice, Practice, It Takes A lot of Practice to Properly Cast Flies

For the fisherman switching from bait fishing to fly fishing there is a conversion period in which they must learn the difference. With bait casting, the weight of the lure and bait draws line from the reel, and extends out into the water. When fly fishing the line is cast into the water and the fly on the line follows the line into the water. It requires a lot of practice and concentration to place the line that is cast from the reel and having the fly land in the desired spot on the surface of the water.

The two main types of lures used in fly fishing are the dry fly that remains on the surface and the wet fly that is designed to sink once it hits the water. Other flies, called emerging flies partially submerge under the water, to duplicate the action of emerging insects from their larva stage.

Fly fishing requires the fisherman to adjust to local conditions as well as altering their technique depending on the time of day and time of year. It will take the fly fisherman a lot of practice and patience to develop the skills necessary to consistently catch fish.

Making Your Own Flies

After a fly fisherman has mastered the difficult techniques of fly fishing he may want to design his own flies. It is a wonderful hobby. A master fly maker can build up quite a collection. A beautiful as well as effective fly can be a rewarding creation.

Whether you create your own flies or become an avid collector, the art of fly fishing can grow on you and become almost an addiction.
